Using Literacy Centers to Strengthen Your Reading and Writing Program, Grades K-3

Online Course

Course Objective/Goals

This on demand, video-based course takes you inside primary classrooms where teachers are using literacy centers to reinforce reading and writing skills and concepts. These centers accommodate a wide range of student interests and reading levels, provide meaningful practice, and free teachers to work with groups of students or individual children. These techniques are easily incorporated into existing reading programs.

The purpose of this online course is to demonstrate literacy centers that directly support the skills and concepts you are focusing on in your curriculum. They are highly engaging to students at all levels of reading and provide children with opportunities to apply their learning and explore new topics without lapsing into “busy work.” You'll learn a wealth of practical suggestions for how to establish and maintain your own literacy centers without exhausting your time or resources.

You will learn how to:

  • develop literacy centers that reinforce your reading and writing instruction
  • actively engage students in the practice and application of literacy skills and concepts while you teach other groups or individuals
  • strengthen struggling students' ability to predict and summarize
  • meet a wide range of learner interests and abilities at each center
  • effectively utilize every bit of classroom space, even when space is limited
  • maintain and manage literacy centers in time-efficient ways
  • support your curriculum with interesting and innovative center activities
  • develop greater responsibility and independence in your students
