Meaningful Independent Literacy Centers and Activities to Keep Students Learning While You Teach Reading Groups, Grades 3-6

Online Course

Course Objective/Goals

This online course takes viewers inside three schools where intermediate students are actively engaged in a wide variety of independent literacy-building activities as part of a comprehensive approach to literacy instruction. Far from "busy work," meaningful centers and assignments are ideally suited to learners in grades three through six.

In order for all students to achieve reading competency, they need to be productively engaged with text as much as possible. While intermediate grade teachers work with small reading groups, the rest of the class can participate in a variety of independent literacy-building centers and activities aligned with grade level standards.

You will learn how to:

  • establish centers that strengthen and enrich students' ongoing literacy development
  • design activities that deepen students' thinking about their reading
  • involve students in on-their-own content area research and reporting
  • monitor and assess students' independent activities in time-efficient ways
  • effectively prepare students to work independently and boost their sense of responsibility for their own learning
